Mareja is situated in Cabo Delgado, the north-eastern most province of Mozambique, and as the ‘crow flies’ only 38 km inland from the stunning coastline of Pemba Bay. The reserve covers 38,000 hectares of coastal miomba forest, a rare and highly threatened habitat type that makes the area a Global Biodiversity Hotspot.
Arriving at Mareja down a long winding track you feel as though you are entering near wilderness but you will be warmly greeted by the Mareja Community who run the project.
The renovated ruins of the old colonial plantation house and outbuildings now serve as the reception and housing area with a variety of accommodation available from dormitory, en-suite to our brand new eco-lodges built from local materials. The area can be reached by 4x4 and is about 2 1/2 hours from Pemba, the last 28 km is on a bush track.
