Driving to Mareja takes about 2 1/2 hours, with the last 28 km on a bush road, so a 4x4 is needed. Click here for Google Maps
Inland route
From Pemba take the Montepuez road past the old control post at Mahat
After about 80km on this road you reach Silva Makua/Salave
Here turn right, NORTH towards Macomia, Mueda
After about 32km, passing Ancuabe and reaching Biaque. where there is a National Park post
Opposite the post in Biaque turn right towards Nanduli, on a bush road
(It is now 28km until you reach Mareja)
After 7km arrive in Nanduli village
In Nanduli at the main square take a tight left turn at the shop/disco/hang-out and between a high bamboo fence
Continue on the track out of village, which becomes a bit more bumpy and bush-like
You pass machambas, farms and after 11km a bridge and cross into Mareja reserve
From this bridge it is 10km to until you reach Mareja village and the main house and accommodation beyond
Coastal route
(less accessible route, check with locals that it is open before your set off!)
From Pemba take the Montepuez road
At Wepani turn right towards Metuge (12km from Pemba)
Carry on towards Metuge until you reach Tara tara (cattle corals) after about 24km
After Tara Tara descend towards low ground and at the crossroad with Maharunga left and Nangororo right. turn right
It is now 23km to Mareja (10km to Rio Maipa and the area of Mareja. there are two more rivers to cross r.nateco and r. massapello) after the latter there are only 6km left to go on good roads before arriving in the Mareja village
